Drielandenpunt 1956 with Theo Hendriks.

When Sikko arrived from the USA he made a trip to Valkenburg The Netherlands with his friend Theo Hendriks (1956). We still haven't found any relatives of him, so, if you have any information about this person, please feel free to contact us. We know he wasn't an airmen. We know he lived in The Hague at that time.
This picture is taken at 'drielandenpunt', the place where Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands converge.

Toen Sikko uit Amerika terug was heeft hij een uitje naar Valkenburg gemaakt met zijn vriend Theo Hendriks (1956). We hebben nog geen familie van hem kunnen traceren, mocht je informatie hebben, laat het gerust even weten. We weten dat hij geen piloot was. Hij woonde destijds in Den Haag. Deze dia is genomen bij het 'drielandenpunt', de plek waar Belgie, Duitsland en Nederland samenkomen.

T33-A Bryan Air Force Base TR-550 TR-417

Another slide, this time with some T33-A with the words 'T33-A b.a.f.b. ramp' as indication. In the log of Sikko there's a 550 and a 417 as seen on the picture. R.F. Mc Donald was his instructor on the times he flew with this airplane. Since there are two pictures with Maxwell Air Force Base (Beechcraft C45-H) we assume this picture has to be dated the 9th or the 10th of January 1955.

Een dia met de opmerking T33-A b.a.f.b. ramp'. Volgens het logboek heeft mij met de TR-550 meerdere keren gevlogen en met de 417 ook één keer. De heer R.F. Mc Donald was zijn instructeur en vloog met hem in het toestel. Omdat we al eerder te maken hadden met Maxwell Air Force Base met toestellen Beechcraft C45-H), twee dia's, nemen we aan dat hij deze dia genomen heeft op 9 of 10 januari 1955. Hij zou het fototoestel immers bij zich hebben gehad.

Gila Bend F-84E / F-84G with 3600th sqn / 313th sqn

Gisteren de documentaire van 'Klu in Koude Oorlog' Republic F-84E/G Thunderjet van Centerline bekeken. Prachtige beelden van het vliegtuig waar Sikko in 1955 mee oefende. In deze documentaire werd gesproken over het aanvliegen van doelen. Sikko heeft zijn logboek gekaft met een kaart waarop, ineens, herkenbare aanduidingen waren gedaan. Het zoeken in Google levert verrassende resultaten op, nummers op de grond (bijvoorbeeld range 4) die na al die jaren nu nog zichtbaar zijn. Probeer het zelf. Geef Google Earth de opdracht Gila Bend te vinden en zoek.

Yesterday we've seen the documentary 'Klu in the Cold War' Republic F-84E/G Thunderjet published by Centerline. Nice images of the plane Sikko used to fly in 1955. In this documentery they mentioned how flying towards a target was mapped out. Sikko had decorated his logbook with a piece of a map on which suddenly, recoginizable lines had been drawn. A search in Google gave surprising results, how about the numbers on the ground that after all these years are still visible (range 4). Try it yourself, get onto Google Earth and search for Gila Bend. Have fun.

10 july 1956 Sikko Steen postcard home.

Soesterberg, 10th July 1956

Dear everyone, 

In contrary to what I said Monday I will be coming home. I can't go visiting The Hague, because they already have a visitor. It's dirty wet weather here, I've done nothing the whole day. Nobody said anything yesterday, I could go on flying. I've been through Mach barrier and it will be all this week because otherwise to much is being done. According to the newspapers it didn't rain as much at your place as it did at ours. I will be coming by train as I think about it now. See you Friday or Saturday. Sincery greeting from your son and brother.

This postcard was send at the 10th July 1956. He crashed in the IJsselmeer 13th July 1956. He never made it home again. The postcard arrived after he died.

T33-a line up 1954 Bryan Air Force Base

Tbirds lined up at BAFB, according to Sikko as he's written this on the slide. On one of the airplane a serial number 19096.  We believe the rest of the serial numbers are 19274 / ##225 / ##139.
Perhaps this picture was taken before or after the 4 ship formation exercise as is written in the log on the 31th March 1955.

Tbirds op een rij at BAFB, dat is wat Sikko heeft geschreven bij deze dia. Op een van de staarten staat het nummer 19096. We denken dat de rest van de nummer 19724 / ##225 / ##139 zijn. Misschien is deze dia wel genomen voor of na de 4 vliegtuigen formatie oefening, zoals is genoteerd in het logboek op 31 maart 1955.

Tailsection of a T33-a B.A.F.B.

Not much to tell about this slide. It's a tailsection of a T33-a at Bryan Air Force Base. Sikko Steen was stationed there from the 27th of September 1954 up to the 28th of April 1955.

Niet veel te vertellen hierover. Het is een staartdeel van een T33-a op Bryan Air Force Base. Sikko Steen was gestationeerd hier van 27 september 1954 tot en met 28 april 1955.

Texan Drive-In / nAa 1955

Noted with this slide was Bryan Tex'spino or something. We studied the slide and searched the internet. The Texan drive-in's that were mentioned are torn down or closed. Those were in Pecos and Midland. We know Sikko was in Lubbock, perhaps they travelled through Midland and/or Pecos on their way to Los Angelos (or back of course). We don't know that...yet. In the search we found little about the National Auto Association, apart from some memorabilia that you can get on e-bay. Perhaps he just took the picture because the Texan is also an airplane he flew back in 1954 Marana Air Force Base. Perhaps in future we learn more about the restaurant and/or the nAa. 

Bij deze dia staat Bryan Tex'spino of zoiets. Slecht leesbaar. Het internet leert ons dat de Texan Drive-in's in Peco en Midland gesloten of afgebroken zijn. We weten dat Sikko in Lubbock was. Misschien reisde hij door Midland en/of Pecos op de route van of naar Los Angelos. Dat weten we nog niet. We vonden maar bar weinig over de National Auto Association, een paar memorabilia op e-bay. Misschien nam hij deze foto wel omdat de Texan een vliegtuig is waarin hij vloog in 1954 op Marana AFB. Misschien leren we meer in de toekomst over het restaurant en/of de nAa.
